Making Thinking Visible

I had the privilege of attending an insightful professional development program led by Ms Sangita Chima on the topic of "Making Thinking Visible in the Classroom" (MTV). This approach, developed by researchers at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, is all about bringing transparency to students' thought processes, enriching their learning experiences.

Our students enthusiastically embraced MTV activities, engaging in activities like See-Think-Wonder to spark their curiosity. This approach has not only boosted their classroom participation, but also fostered collaboration and led to the emergence of thought-provoking questions.

Here are some snapshots of our Amity School students actively involved in various tasks as part of their "Making Thinking Visible" project. A big shoutout to Ms. Sangitha for her outstanding leadership and dedication to enhancing our students' learning journey! 👏 #Education #MTV #CriticalThinking #professionaldevelopment #teaching

Lesson plan - European Nationalism - First part

Objective: Students will understand the emergence of nationalism and nation-states in 19th century Europe.

Materials:

Images of Frédéric Sorrieu's prints

Flags of European nations

Handouts with key terms and definitions

Warm-Up (5 minutes):

Have students brainstorm what they already know about nationalism and nation-states.

Write their responses on the board and discuss as a class.

Direct Instruction (10 minutes):

Introduce Frédéric Sorrieu and his series of prints visualizing a world of "democratic and social Republics."

Show image of first print and have students describe what they see.

Explain the symbolism in the image, including the statue of Liberty, the flags and national costumes of the peoples, and the presence of Christ and angels.

Introduce the concept of nation-states and how they differed from multi-national dynastic empires.

Guided Practice (10 minutes):

Pass out flags of European nations and have students identify which ones are represented in Sorrieu's print.

Discuss the historical context of each nation at the time the print was created (e.g. Switzerland and the US were already nation-states, Germany was not yet united, etc.)

Independent Practice (15 minutes):

Pass out handouts with key terms and definitions related to nationalism and nation-states.

Have students match the terms with their definitions.

Review answers as a class.

Conclusion (5 minutes):

Review the main points of the lesson.

Ask students to share any additional questions or observations about nationalism and nation-states in 19th century Europe.

Wikimedia Movement Strategy Discourse

Recently, a meeting was held at Thrissure with active wikimedians in Kerala, India to discuss the future of the Wikimedia movement and its strategy. The discourse provided an opportunity for wikimedians to discuss their views on the direction the Wikimedia movement should take and the challenges it should address.

Wikimedia training at Seedac College of Arts and Science

We are excited to announce that we recently held a successful Wikipedia editing training workshop for graduate students at Seedac College of Arts and Science, Sreekrishnapuram, Palakkad,Kerala. The session was inaugurated by the college director, Mr. Shabeer, and was attended by 20 enthusiastic students. The workshop provided valuable hands-on experience for the participants, who learned how to edit and create Wikipedia articles. We believe that empowering students with the skills to contribute to the world's largest online encyclopedia is an important step in fostering digital literacy and promoting knowledge sharing. We are grateful to all the participants and the college leadership for their support of this important initiative.
